“Mentoring is the avenue for us to follow in order to give back to our younger Phi Psis the experiences that we encountered in life and share the successes and failures that have strengthened us.”

How will a mentor match be made?

  1. Starting in September, students will review alumni profiles and send a message through Phi Psi Connect to request mentorship.
  2. You will need to review request(s) and confirm mentee(s). You can do this though the “Wineman Mentoring Advantage Program” tab on the right, under “Mentor requests and approvals.”
  3. Once you’ve confirmed your maximum number of mentees, update your settings on Phi Psi connect by going to your profile, then select “Edit Profile” and under “Offer Mentorship” uncheck “Wineman Mentoring Advantage Program” to turn off your availability.
  4. After confirming a mentee(s), you are officially part of the Mentoring Advantage Program. Start the conversation with your new mentee to establish a time to discuss a regular meeting time and communication method.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We believe that mentoring will be a positive and enriching experience for you. Specifically, this program allows you the opportunity to:

  • Make a real contribution to the life and success of an undergraduate brother
  • Assist in the development of the next generation of leaders
  • Cultivate a stronger connection with current undergraduates and the national organization

MAP is designed so that the mentor relationship lasts the period of one academic year (8-9 months). However, we encourage mentors to stay involved with their mentee as long as they desire/benefit.

The means by which mentors will be matched with a mentee vary from chapter to chapter. A connection request will come in the form of an email, push notification or text message once a mentee reaches out through Phi Psi Connect. The two most common ways mentors will be matched with a mentee include:

  • Based on individual preferences and connection request.
  • Chapter new member education connection request based on criteria related to chapter, major, location preferences and other education and experience.

As a mentor, you may choose to mentor up to ten mentees. If you choose not to mentor more than one individual at a time, you are requested to send a notification of your choice to each additional mentee who sent a connection request. If you receive multiple requests, you will be able to review each student’s profile before confirming a request. We hope you will accept as many mentees as you feel comfortable mentoring, though you do have the option to decline a student if you simply don’t have time or think it’s the wrong fit. We recommend you mentor one to two students throughout the year. Most of our volunteers choose to mentor one or two students.

First preference to be a mentor is given to alumni members of Phi Kappa Psi from an accredited institution and chapter with the ability to commit to 2-3 hours per month building the mentoring relationship.

Previous mentors have shared that one of the most gratifying aspects of volunteering through MAP is the flexibility of the relationship. You and the mentee determine how the relationship will be structured. Specific expectations include:

  • Spend approximately three hours per month building the mentoring relationship
  • Set expectations with your student mentor regarding how and when you will contact each other
  • Help your student identify and set goals, track progress, and adjust
  • Approach the mentoring relationship with an open mind, professionalism, and respect
  • Support your undergraduates’ professional and personal development
  • Respond to all communications in a timely manner
  • Communicate problems with the mentoring relationship to program staff
  • To offer jobs or internships to your mentee
  • To have all the answers for your mentee
  • To initiate all contact with your mentee

Alumni are welcome to continue mentoring their students as long as they are willing and able.

Events and programs are not required. The great thing about this program is that your mentorship connection can be carried out as the mentor and mentee see fit. However, we do encourage you to attend as many program events as possible, both in person and virtual, to build a strong connection with your student.

You do not have to live in proximity to a campus to participate. You can mentor by connecting with your student via phone calls, email, Zoom or FaceTime and still be a great alumni mentor. We will also provide virtual events and discussions for you and your mentee to participate in.

To get connected with an undergraduate brother, we encourage you to register by following the instructions referenced above.

We encourage you to complete your Phi Psi Connect profile by including all relevant professional, academic, and volunteer experience. In addition, we have included the opportunity to answer the question, “Why do you want to mentor a student?” This will provide students with the best information to request mentorship. If you aren’t requested for mentorship through this program, Phi Kappa Psi offers many opportunities to volunteer your time and expertise or you may contact [email protected] for additional assistance.
